Hen's and Buck's Night

Image

Traditionally speaking, the hen's and buck's night were unheard of. In fact, it has only been over the past 2-3 decades that they have become increasingly popular. Today, the hens and bucks night have become an essential part of Australian wedding planning culture. In earlier years, the closest thing resembling the hen's night was the shower tea or bridal shower. The main purpose of the bridal shower is to ‘shower’ the bride-to-be with gifts, usually for her home, and to have fun!

It was often the case that the bridesmaids would also organise a second shower for the bride that was attended only by close female friends. At this second shower, the bride would receive her lingerie and anything else she wouldn’t want to open in front of her family. Over time, the second shower became the hens night. Although these days, the hen's night may be anything from a quite night in, to a wild night out on the town!

The buck's night is no exception. Celebrating the last night of ‘freedom’ is something that the boys hold close to their hearts. From crazy wild nights at strip clubs to go-karting with their mates, your finance is likely to be looking forward to what his best man has in store for him.

Try not to get too worked up about what’s going to happen to your groom on his night out. Have a chat together before planning your hen's and buck's nights. Set some ground rules, and talk about your expectations with each other. Just make sure that you follow the rules too!

Planning The Hen's Night

Usually the matron/maid of honour is responsible for planning the hen's night. More often than not however, the bride will like to have some say in what’s going to happen on the night. Your bridesmaids will want to ensure that you have the night of your life. It’s time to let your hair down, forget about all the wedding dramas and enjoy your last night of ‘freedom’ before heading down the aisle.

So where should your bridesmaids begin? Probably the most important aspect in planning your hen's night is to ensure that your bridesmaids check what you do and don’t want for your night out.
Whilst some women find the idea or strippers and naked men prancing around fantastic, this simply may not be for you. If you don’t want your night of fun turning into a night of embarrassment on your part, make sure that you are clear on what you definitely don’t want, especially if involves strippers.

It’s a good idea to plan for your hen's night on the same day as your bridal shower (if you are having one). This way, you may have a more subdued afternoon with your family and friends, and then rev it up a little at night with those wanting to party on. The best time to plan to have your hen's night is usually anywhere from 1-4 weeks prior to your wedding. It’s also a good idea for your finance to have his buck's night on the same date. This way, you’ll both be having too much fun to be worrying about what’s going on at your partners party.
